Circulation/Technical Services Assistant
(Part-time, 24 hours per week)
This part-time position includes day, evening, and weekend hours in the Circulation/Technical Services Department. Applicants must be able to work Monday evenings and 1-2 weekends a month as a regular part of their schedule. The rest of the hours are negotiable based on department needs and employee availability.
Primary duties include working as a supervisor at our busy Circulation Desk and acting as the departmental person-in-charge in the absence of the Circulation Department and Assistant Department Heads. This position includes responsibilities in Technical Services including retrieving and editing records for library materials using the OCLC cataloging utility and MARC Listener, entering short bibliographic records for library materials in the database, and editing previously cataloged materials in the database. This position also assists with materials processing and materials acquisitions. The employee will also be trained to work in the library’s makerspace.
Ideal candidates will have good interpersonal and communication skills, dedication to positive patron interactions and providing excellent customer service, be able to work independently, and be able to adapt quickly and easily to change in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent with the completion of an LTA certification preferred. Priority will be given to candidates that have previous experience that aligns with the job responsibilities.
This position reports to the Circulation and Technical Services Department Head and starts at $17.17. Compensation is negotiable for candidates with education or experience aligning with the position responsibilities and requirements. Benefits include paid vacation time, inclusion in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) and the option to join the library’s dental and vision insurance plans.

Position Description:
Do you enjoy working with seniors? The Bloomingdale Public Library is seeking a dedicated librarian to coordinate and implement homebound deliveries to seniors and provide engaging customer service to the Bloomingdale community. As part of our Adult Services team, you will assist patrons at our Reference Desk; manage a collection area that reflects our diverse community; and match patrons with their ideal books, movies, and more. This position also facilitates a quarterly book discussion for seniors off site. Physical requirements for this position include the ability to lift and carry 25 pounds.
Responsibilities:
- Provide excellent customer service at the Reference Desk, including readers’ advisory, Notary Public services, and assisting with eBooks and downloadable media
- Coordinate and deliver materials to nursing home and homebound patrons
- Facilitate a quarterly book discussion for seniors
- Collection development including purchasing, weeding, and shelf management of selection areas
- Promote our collection by creating interesting displays, booklists, and more
- Opportunity to staff the library’s Makerspace (average 1-2 shifts per month, training provided)
- Assist with adult library programming
- Senior services outreach with community partners
- Assist at popular community and library events such as our Ice Cream Social, Halloween Party, or Holiday Open House
Qualifications:
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Work independently and prioritize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines
- Communicate effectively and clearly with patrons and staff
- Comfortable in nursing home and assisted living environments with an interest in working with seniors
- A team player who collaborates with others and demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills
- Exceptional customer service skills to help patrons of all ages and skill levels
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, ILS and related library software, and willingness to learn current and emerging technology
Requirements:
- ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS
- Minimum 2 years experience in a public library or comparable business/organization
- Valid Illinois driver’s license
- Vehicle capable of transporting at least 2-3 large bins
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Part-time weekday schedule: Mondays 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tuesdays 5-9 p.m., Wednesdays 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursdays 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Weekend flexibility for monthly rotating schedule: Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. & Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
Salary: $22.00/hour depending on qualifications, experience, and organizational equity
