Read a Latte! Winter Reading Program December 13, 2021-February 4, 2022

Join our Winter Reading challenge! Register to receive your information packet and starting prize. Complete your reading log by reading for just three hours, Turn in your log at the Youth Services desk by Friday, February 4 to receive your final prize and be entered into the Grand Prize drawing.


1000 Books Before Kindergarten

This is an ongoing program.
Registration is required.

Be on the lookout for our exciting new program 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. This reading program encourages all Bloomingdale families and caregivers with young children before they enter Kindergarten. Studies have shown that families that start reading aloud to their children from birth strengthen language and vocabulary skills. Ask at the Youth Services Desk for more information or sign up online.


Valentines for Veterans

Wednesday, January 5-Thursday, February 3

Children and adults are invited to make Valentine cards for veterans. All Valentine cards will be given to veterans who are currently hospitalized at Hines Veterans Hospital. Art and card supplies will be available as a TAKE IT, MAKE IT, RETURN IT craft at the Youth Services desk. Cards made from personal supplies are welcome as well. Please turn in all cards to the Youth Services desk. Envelopes for cards are not required.


Baby Packs!

These activity filled backpacks are designed specifically for children ages 0-24 months and include materials to create your own at home storytime! Be on the lookout for our in-person baby programs (Come Together, Baby Tales, and Baby, Let's Make Music) to return when COVID conditions improve.


Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Packs

Available to check out.

These backpacks are designed to make a family's journey of healing following a traumatic experience easier to nagivate. These packs contain books, games, and a parent/child resource booklet full of coping strategies, activities, and ideas to ease through a tough transition. Topics include loss of a pet, divorce/separation, and moving, and additional subjects added on an ongoing basis.


Born to Read Bags

Register in person or over the phone

In order to promote the importance of reading to babies, the Library offers Born to Read
Packets to new parents in Bloomingdale. The new baby will receive a congratulatory packet that includes a free board book. If you or anyone you know in Bloomingdale is a new parent and would like to receive this service, please visit the Youth Services Desk or call 630-924-2740.


Looking For A Good Book?!

This is an ongoing program.

Choose a title from a very popular Monarch (K-2 grade), Bluestem (3-5 grade), or Caudill (4-8 grade) Illinois state award book lists! Join the Youth Services Department as we virtually discuss each title to help you pick something adventurous, mysterious, or even historical. Readers will be eligible to vote for their favorite titles in Spring 2021 when voting throughout the whole state of Illinois occurs. Many copies of of all titles are available at the library and videos of our book talks will be available on our YouTube channel.

Learn extreme facts about the deep ocean, meet some super cool shark and ocean scientists, and make crafts to celebrate the most unexplored place on earth. Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.

Where do Animals Go in the Winter?

Grades K-3
Learn about wintertime animal habitats then identify and create animal tracks to become an expert winter animal tracker in your neighborhood. Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


STEAM Challenge

Monday, January 31 at 4:15-5:00pm.
Registration is required.

Grades 3-6 with Adult Partner
Engineers solve problems using math and science. Work together with you adult partner to engineer a solution to the challenge problem using materials you will find in your mystery box. Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


Coding a Lego Maze

Tuesday, February 8 2022 from 4-4:45pm.
Registration is required.

Grades K-2
Use your creative and technical skills to build a Lego maze and code the way out! No coding experience or knowledge necessary. Registration begins January 24th at 9:00am.


Homeschool Midday Makerspace Program

We Like to Move It, Move It

Every Prince, Princess, Knight, and Jester are invited to join us! Wear your shiny suit of armor, sparkly ball gown, or come dressed like your favorite fairy tale creature. Homeschool Midday Book Club

Wednesday, March 9 2022 from 2:00-3:00pm.
Registration is required. The Unicorn Rescue Society by Adam Gidwitz

Grades 3-5
Explore the world of cryptids with the Bluestem-nominated book, crafts, snacks, and more. Different activities for children preschool through grade 2 will be provided at the same time. The first five people that sign up will get a copy of the book to keep. Registration begins February 21st at 9:00am.


Art for National Crayon Day

Grades K-2
Crayons are fun for coloring, but they are used for many types of art. Come join us at the library to try some new techniques and bring home a crayon masterpiece! Registration begins February 21st at 9:00am.

In-Person Storytimes

Every Friday in November, December and January, 10:30-11:00a.m.
Registration is required.

Families
Join us every Friday for in-person storytime. Listen to our staff read stories, sing songs, and tell rhymes.
Registration for this program will be one week prior to the event. Please register as a family. This event will be held outdoors, weather permitting.



Take It, Make It

Registration is required.

Even though we're not doing programming in the library building, we want to continue to offer unique experiences that you can do from home. Please register for each program individually. All kits or parties will be available for pick up at the Youth Services Desk during their allotted time frame.


Families
Get your boarding passes ready! Together we will hop on an imaginary plane and go all around the world to experience the different ways cultures celebrate the wintertime. Registration will begin November 22 at 9:00am.


New Year's Bash

Get all the materials ready to bring in the New Year with this fun craft and activities based kit. Registration will begin November 22 at 9:00am.


Arctic Animals

January 3-7
Registration is required.

Ages 3-5
Winter is the time to learn about Arctic animals big and small! This kit includes fun and easy Arctic animal crafts. Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


Snow

January 10-14
Registration is required.

Grades K-6
You will have snow much fun making a snowflake puzzle, snow science experiments, and creating snow poetry! Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.

Little Chefs

January 17-21

Do you like to cook or help out in the kitchen? This kit contains everything you'll need to become a chef in training! Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


National Puzzle Day

January 24-28
Registration is required.

Grades K-2
Celebrate National Puzzle Day by making your own jigsaw puzzle, along with some puzzle crafts. Solve our special puzzle and get a surprise! Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


Pipe Cleaner People

January 31-February 4
Registration is required.

Grades K-2
Create fun poseable people with simple materials. Registration will begin December 20 at 9:00am.


Winter Olympics
