National Library Week - April 13-19

The theme of this year's National Library Week is Lives change @ your library. We'll give you the opportunity to share how libraries have changed your life all week by posting your story on our wall - in our lobby! We'll also be highlighting our myriad digital resources that help bring the library into your world 24/7. Stop at our eLibrary Showcase on Monday, April 14, to hear about our ebooks, emagazines, and other online learning opportunities. While you are here, register to win a free prize!

eLibrary Showcase

From digital magazines to downloadable movies, from online learning opportunities to an extensive collection of eBooks and audiobooks, Bloomingdale Public Library is dedicated to meeting your needs in the virtual world as well as on-site. Book, magazines, movies, and other digital materials can now be accessed on the go through your mobile device. Staff members will be on hand to demonstrate the many digital offerings available through your library. We’ll show you how you can access our resources 24/7, and how we can provide you with a world of entertainment, information, and education from your desktop, phone, or tablet. Historical Book Discussion

To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild

The Historical Book Group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Books are selected on topics of American history from pre-Revolutionary War to current time including biographies, history books, historical fiction and classics. Monday Night Page Turners

The Monday Night Page Turners book discussion group meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m., except August and December. The group reads contemporary and classic fiction and nonfiction. Copies of the selections are available at the Circulation Desk. Newcomers are always welcome!

Bloomingdale Mystery Mavens

Join fellow mystery fans for an illuminating discussion of mysteries at the Bloomingdale Mystery Mavens book group. If you are a new resident in Bloomingdale or would like to find out more about the library, attend our Library tour offered on the first Saturday of each month. Join a reference librarian as we give a short overview of all the library has to offer. We will show you where various items are located, and tell you about the services we offer, so you can get the most out of your library. We also offer library tours by appointment. English Conversation Group

This drop-in conversation group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and is designed to give adult English-as-a-second language learners practice speaking English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Individuals are welcome to attend whenever they can. All adult English learners are welcome. Registration is not necessary for this free program held in the Library Conference Room.

Armchair Tour of the Universe

Go on a trip around the Universe without leaving your seat! Michelle Nichols from the Adler Planetarium will not only take you on a whirlwind visit through our Universe's most amazing objects using images from the world's most advanced telescopes, but she will also bring you back in time to the beginnings of our Universe and forward in time to show how our Universe might meet its end.

Did you get a new tablet or eReader and wonder how to take advantage of the library’s eBooks and downloadable magazines? We’ll have a librarian available to answer all of your questions, troubleshoot any issues, and get you started using eReaders, audiobooks and eBooks, MyMediaMall, Axis 360 eBooks,and the library’s new digital magazine service, Zinio. No registration is required; just check in at the Adult Services Desk and leave the rest up to us!

Genealogy Club

Genealogy Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month,except in November and December. Local History Assistant, Leslie Drewitz, provides internet and archival genealogy instruction and research support. Back to School for Adults: Resources for the Unemployed and Career Changers

Join College of DuPage adult admissions representative Angela Nackovic at this seminar focusing on the resources that are offered to career changers, the unemployed and adult students at COD. Learn about college funding through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and financial aid and scholarships for adults. Angela will also talk about the programs and services available for adult learners at College of DuPage.

CREATE! - Open Craft Tuesday at the Library

A wide range of basic safety procedures to decrease the risk to students’ computers and data will be covered. We will discuss basic electrical safety, virus protection, backup procedures, and more.

Beginners Internet Course: Basic Email

Students learn how to create an email address, read messages sent to them, send messages to someone else, and use several popular email tricks to make this process faster and easier.

Access 1

Monday April 21, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

This class will provide a basic understanding of using Microsoft Access. Topics such as creating Tables, Queries, Forms, and Reports will be covered.

Beginners Internet Course: Email Attachments & More

Tuesday April 29, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Students will take the next step with email, learning how to attach files, view attachments sent to them, organize email into folders, work with an address book, and adjust the options of their accounts to personalize and speed up working with their email.

Join us for open play and design challenges with friends! This program is provided through a generous donation from the Salerno's Rosedale Funeral Chapel.

Guess That Shredded Book Contest (Children up to Grade 6)

National Library Week: April 13-April 19

Registration is not required

Join the fun as Youth Services continues a popular tradition...guessing which books have been, oh my, shredded by the librarians! Use your magnifying glass to identify the title and author of each tattered book. If there's more than one correct guess, each savvy sleuth will be entered into a drawing.

Hands-On Science (Grades 3-6)

Fun with Science! Explore...Upcycling. Learn about trash islands in the ocean, watch what can be made from landfills, and make a recycled craft for Earth month.

Drop in Movie (All Ages)

Registration is not required.

Get comfortable, have some popcorn, and enjoy the matinee. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Early Literacy Workshop (Ages 3-Grade K and a caregiver)

Tuesday April 29, 6:30-7:30 OR Wednesday, April 30, 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Registration is required and begins March 31.

Extend your child's literacy fun in this interactive preschool book arts class. Children will create their own books by using various media. We will begin with stories that tie into the arts. Simple book vocabulary, hand-eye coordination, and pre-literacy skills are emphasized.

A Yu-Gi-Oh! card tournament is held every first Teen Game Night of the month (the second Thursday). Tournaments are single duel, and no proxy cards are allowed during tournament play.



Beginner Robotics Workshop

Intermediate Robotics Workshop

Take your robotics skills further with this intermediate workshop! This workshop will be held at DeVry’s Addison campus in Room 101. Please note that transportation from the library is not provided.
