On the Same Page

Please join us for our third annual On the Same Page project. We invite you to read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and participate in our programs, events, and book discussions throughout the month of October. Complimentary copies of the book are available at the library while supplies last, so pick up your copy today!

Attend a program at BPL and be eligible to enter a free drawing for the beautiful Night Circus-inspired quilt specially crafted for us by the wonderfully talented Loose Threads quilt group. The quilt will be on display in the library all month. Attend a program at all three participating libraries (Bloomingdale Public Library, Roselle Public Library, and Itasca Community Library), and you can enter a free drawing for an eReader. Canvas banner artist Glen Davies has been designing and painting fun houses, dark rides, show fronts, and sideshow banners for the past 30 years. His work has appeared at the Field Museum and at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Join Glen for a slide presentation featuring nearly 100 years of circus banners by various artists.



A Magical Evening with Jeanette Andrews

Steve Gossard, curator of Circus Collections for the Milner Library at Illinois State University, and Alex Todd, son of the original Flying Wards trapeze artists, will present a look at the rich history of the circus in Illinois.




Magical Arrangements

Peggy Garvin of Garvin Gardens will show you how to create a fresh flower arrangement based on the themes and colors of The Night Circus. Cost of the class is $10 and is due at the time of registration. All supplies are included. Please register in person in the Business Office. Call (630) 924-2730 for more information. Bloomingdale Mystery Mavens

If you are a new resident in Bloomingdale or would like to find out more about the library, attend our Library tour offered on the first Saturday of each month. Join a reference librarian as we give a short overview of all the library has to offer. We will show you where various items are located, and tell you about the services we offer, so you can get the most out of your library. We also offer library tours by appointment. English Conversation Group

9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

This drop-in conversation group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and is designed to give adult English-as-a-second language learners practice speaking English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Individuals are welcome to attend whenever they can. All adult English learners are welcome. Registration is not necessary for this free program held in the Library Conference Room.

Seniors' Game Day

Join us for an afternoon of cards, board games and even video games especially for adults 55 and over! This monthly program is a great way to take a break from your day and meet others who share your interests. The Library provides the refreshments and a great selection of games to try. There is no registration needed for this free program. Bring your friends!

HeartSaver CPR Training

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Learn CPR basics from local firefighter and paramedic, Jeff Skelley, owner of My Life Saver CPR. This hands-on class designed for the general public will cover adult, child, and infant CPR and choking, and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator for heart attacks. The cost is $40 for the three hour session which includes the purchase of the required study guide. Each participant that completes the course will be mailed a CPR certification card after the class. Please register for this course in the Business Office. In order to receive a full refund, you must cancel your registration 48 hours before the program begins. For questions regarding this program, please call (630) 924-2730. Cash or checks are accepted forms of payment. Checks should be made out to "My Life Saver CPR".

Genealogy Club

Genealogy Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month,except in November and December. Local History Assistant, Leslie Drewitz, provides internet and archival genealogy instruction and research support. Laura Cosgrove Lorenzana, genealogist and author of the blog The Last Leaf on This Branch, will offer ideas and best practices on how your genealogy work can be properly stored and prepared to pass onto future generations.


Youth Services Programs

Craft Time (All Ages)

First Thursday of the month, 3:00-8:00 p.m.
Registration is Not Required.

Visit the librarians on the first Thursday of every month for a quick craft lesson. They'll supply the materials to get you started, and you can finish on your own.

Family Game Days (Grades 1-6, Parents welcome too)

Thursdays: October 10, November 14, and December 12
4:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.

Registration is Not Required

Join us for an all around fun gaming time with board games, video games, and snacks! Come by yourself, bring a friend, or bring your family! See who can get the highest score on Wii Bowling, who can sink the most battleships or who is the champion checker player. Children under 9 must be accompanied by a parent.

Lego Madness (Grades 1-5)

6:00-7:30 p.m.

Registration is required and beings Monday, August 5 for Bloomingdale residents.

Come build, explore, and imagine with our Lego sets. A theme/challenge will be presented each session, and creations will be displayed in the lower level display cases.

Read for the Record (Ages 3-5)

Thursday, October 3, 1:30-2:15 p.m.

Registration is not required.

Join in the record-breaking fun when we read Otis and the Puppy by Loren Long with children all over the country. Songs, games, and stories will add to the fun.

Star Wars Reads Day (All ages and family-friendly)

Registration is required and begins August 5.

Join us for crafts, activities, and snacks from a galaxy far, far, away...perhaps even a visit from a Star Wars character!

Fear Thee Well... (Grades 3-6)

Registration is required and begins Monday, October 7 for Bloomingdale Residents. Non-residents may register beginning October 22.

Join us for an exploration of Scary. Find out what spooked famous people and learn fancy big words like Arachnophobia. Listen to a chilling story, vote on famous music's scare factor, and have some not-so-scary surprises, too.

Halloween Stories (Drop in; All Ages)

Third Saturday of the month

Your move! It’s time to duel! Calling all players of collectible games, ages nine and up! Join us for open play, a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, and snacks! Feel free to bring in other games, including Bakugan, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and other collectible card games. No registration required.

A Yu-Gi-Oh! card tournament is held every first Teen Game Night of the month (the second Thursday). Tournaments are single duel, and no proxy cards are allowed during tournament play.
