Winter Reading Programs
for All Ages



Winter Reading Program: Imagine a Reading Wonderland! (Infants-6th Grade)

Sign up begins December 17

Registration begins December 17, book logs must be turned in by February 8.

On Fairfield Way, the snow is glistening, a beautiful sight, we're happy inside, reading in our Library Wonderland! This year's Winter Reading Program is designed for children from infant-6th grade. Beginning on December 17, you may register in person at the Youth Services Reference Desk to receive your information packet and starting prize. Complete the program by reading for just three hours. Turn in your log by February 8 to receive your final prize and be entered into the grand prize drawing.

Open to high school students (9th-12th grades)

Get ready for finals at the library’s Exam Cram! We’ll have group and individual study areas, Wi-Fi, computer access, and reference help. We'll provide caffeine and snacks - you provide the brain power!

Historical Book Discussion

Fusiliers: The Saga of a British Redcoat Regiment in the American Revolution by Mark Urban

The Historical Book Discussion Group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Books are selected on topics of American history from pre-Revolutionary War to current time including biographies, history books, historical fiction and classics. Copies of book selections are available at the circulation desk one month before the discussion. Newcomers are always welcome!


One Book Minimum Discussion Group

The group will participate in a bookshare. No monthly reading requirement. Come ready to talk about a book you've read and enjoyed with the group

One Book Minimum Discussion Group is a book group that appeals to the literary interests of patrons in their 20s and 30s. Meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at Ballydoyle Irish Pub & Restaurant in Bloomingdale. Copies of book selections are available at the circulation desk one month before the discussion. Newcomers are always welcome!

If you are a new resident in Bloomingdale or would like to find out more about the library, attend our Library tour offered on the first Saturday of each month. Join a reference librarian as we give a short overview of all the library has to offer. We will show you where various items are located, and tell you about the services we offer, so you can get the most out of your library. We also offer library tours by appointment. Call the Reference Desk at (630) 924-2730 to schedule your tour.


Movie Nights at the Library

English Conversation Group

Wednesday, December 12
10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

This drop-in conversation group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and is designed to give adult English-as-a-second language learners practice speaking English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Individuals are welcome to attend whenever they can. All adult English learners are welcome. Registration is not necessary for this free program held in the Library Conference Room.

Dickens and A Christmas Carol

Everyone knows the story of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the beloved Christmas tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. While we all know this wonderful story, do we know the truth behind this classic holiday tale? Speaker Linda Putnam will break down the tale to discuss Dickens’ motivation for writing it, the source of his inspiration for characters, and the social situations in 1843 England that impacted the story. A slide presentation will accompany the lecture and will feature original illustrations and pages from a first edition.


Seniors' Game Day

2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Join us for an afternoon of cards, board games and even video games especially for adults 55 and over! This monthly program is a great way to take a break from your day and meet others who share your interests. The Library provides the refreshments and a great selection of games to try. There is no registration needed for this free program. Bring your friends!


eReader Drop In Clinic

The eReader doctor is in! Drop by, enjoy refreshments, and have a librarian answer your questions about eReaders and downloading books through MyMediaMall. No registration is required for this drop in program.



Youth Services Programs

Tuesdays with Toys(Drop in, ages 3 months-5 years with a caregiver)

Tuesdays, December 4, and December 18
10:00 a.m-11:30 a.m.

No registration is required.

Tuesdays with Toys is an informal program giving parents with small children the opportunity to meet and talk with other parents, while children play with toys and games. Toys and games are most appropriate for children ages 3 months-5 years. Drop in for one session or both.



Holiday Movieplex: Shrek the Halls

Sunday, December 2
2:00-3:00 p.m.

Tickets are free and will be available in the Business office beginning Saturday, November 3.

Enjoy this years annual holiday movie, with crafts, cookies, giveaways and lots of holiday cheer.










Handprint Christmas Tree (Drop In: Ages 3-Grade 3)

Wednesday, December 5
2:00-4:00 p.m.

No registration is required.

Get ready for the holiday! Stop by any time between 2-4 p.m. to make a handprint Christmas tree. We will be using paint, so please dress appropriately.








Doodle Bugs (Ages 2-3 and their caregivers)

Monday, December 10
11:00-11:30 a.m.

Registration begins December 3.

This is a special art class just for toddlers and parents. Little fingers will experiment with painting, gluing, sticking, and creating while developing fine motor skills.






Cookies and a Craft (Grades K-5)

Wednesday, December 12
6:30-7:30 p.m.

Registration begins December 3 for residents. Non-residents may register beginning December 5.

At this time of the year the oven gets turned on! Enjoy a story, design your own potholder, and decorate your own cookie.








Preschool Pinterest Party (Ages 3-5 with caregiver)

Wednesday, December 19
1:00-1:30 p.m.

Registration begins December 3 for residents. Non-residents may register beginning December 12.

Come have a ball with crafts, games, snacks, and prizes...all while building basic skills. Come discover new ideas for fun parenting, too!




Ornaments from Around the World (Drop In: All Families Welcome)

No registration is required.

Stop by and make multi-cultural ornaments for your tree. Refreshments will be served.

No registration is required.

Tired of all your holiday loot already? Join us for some traditional games and some new variations. Parents are encouraged to participate! Drop in anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. and stay as long as you like.

Watch anime on the library’s big screen! Help plan new anime and manga events, suggest new anime to watch, bring in your decks to duel, and eat snacks. Registration not necessary! Thank you to Crunchyroll and Viz for providing screening permission for our anime.

Teen Game Night

Second Thursday of the month - December 13
Fourth Thursday of the month - 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Experience gaming on our big screen! Shred to Rock Band, battle in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, try out motion gaming with our Kinect, or show off your moves in Dance Dance Revolution! Bring your friends and enjoy free food! Registration not necessary, just stop on by!

A Yu-Gi-Oh! card tournament is held every first Teen Game Night of the month (the second Thursday). Tournaments are single duel, and no proxy cards are allowed during tournament play.

Third Saturday of the month
1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Your move! It’s time to duel! Calling all players of collectible games, ages nine and up! Join us for open play, a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, and snacks! Feel free to bring in other games, including Bakugan, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and other collectible card games. No registration required.
