Youth Services Winter Reading Program

This is a family reading program for infants-6th grade. Don't let the cold chill your bones, come into the library and Warm Up with a Good Book! Beginning on December 19, register in person at the Youth Services Reference Desk to receive your information packet and starting prize. Complete your reading log by reading for just three hours. Turn in your log at the Youth Services desk by February 10 to receive your final prize and be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing.



Adult/Teen Winter Reading Program

Warm Up With a Good Book

Registration begins on December 19

It’s easy! For every book or audiobook you complete between December 19 and February 10, you will receive an entry into our final drawing.

You can register and log in your titles online through our Winter Reading Program website or at the Reference Desk.

Library Trivia Contest

We'll be posting trivia questions about the Library on Facebook during the months of January and February. You can submit your answers through Facebook, instant message or text. Historical Book Discussion Group

The Historical Book Discussion Group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Books are selected on topics of American history from pre-Revolutionary War to current time including biographies, history books, historical fiction and classics. Copies of the selections are available at the Circulation Desk. Newcomers are always welcome!

Are you thinking about purchasing an e-reader or mp3 player to read or listen to books on the go? Have you heard that you can download books from the Bloomingdale Public Library website? Learn how to download books for free using MyMediaMall, our downloadable books service. We will demonstrate how to navigate MyMediaMall, check out items, and download e-books and audiobooks onto compatible devices. We'll tell you which devices will work with this service and which ones won't. A question and answer session will follow the demonstration. The program is a general overview of the service and will not be a hands-on session.

If you are a new resident in Bloomingdale or would like to find out more about the library, attend our Library tour offered on the first Saturday of each month. Join a reference librarian as we give a short overview of all the library has to offer. We will show you where various items are located, and tell you about the services we offer, so you can get the most out of your library. We also offer library tours by appointment. Call the Reference Desk at (630) 924-2730 to schedule your tour.


Movie Nights at the Library

The Help (PG-13) starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis, and Bryce Dallas Howard

A talented cast makes this adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel The Help an Oscar contender. This is the extraordinary story of women in 1960s Mississippi on the eve of the civil rights movement. It tells the story of how breaking the rules helped bring about societal change. Don’t miss this entertaining and touching film. No registration required.


English Conversation Group

Wednesday, January 11 and January 25
10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

This drop-in conversation group is designed to give adult English-as-a-second language learners practice speaking English in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Individuals are welcome to attend whenever they can. All adult English learners are welcome. Registration is not necessary for this free program held in the Library Conference Room.

Seniors' Game Day

Join us for an afternoon of cards, board games and even video games especially for adults 55 and over! This monthly program is a great way to take a break from your day and meet others who share your interests. The Library provides the refreshments and a great selection of games to try. There is no registration needed for this free program. Bring your friends!


Staying Motivated During a Job Search

Every job hunt is different and should be geared towards the individual but there are some definite steps a job seeker can take to stay motivated during the search process. Sally Morrison, career coach, professional resume writer, and co-author of A Taste for Work, offers some unique suggestions for defining the steps to stay motivated during a job search.


HeartSaver CPR

Saturday, January 21
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Learn CPR basics from local firefighter and paramedic, Jeff Skelley, owner of My Life Saver CPR. This hands-on class designed for the general public will cover adult, child, and infant CPR and choking, and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator for heart attacks. The class costs $25 for the three hour session, and each attendee will receive a Heartsaver CPR card from the American Heart Association that is good for two years. Please register for this course in the Business Office. In order to receive a full refund, you must cancel your registration 48 hours before the program begins. Snowflake Serenades Concert Series - The Barefoot Hawaiian

Genealogy Club

Genealogy Club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, except in November and December. Members share search strategies and explore library resources with expert guidance from Local History Room staff member Leslie Drewitz. Registration is not required for this free program.

For Preschoolers

Storytimes

Winter Storytimes for preschoolers of all ages run from January 9 through February 17. Open unregistered storytimes are offered as well as registered classes. Registration begins December 5. Click here for more information about Winter Storytimes.


For Families and Kids of All Ages

Craft Time (Ages 5 and up)

First Thursday of the month, 3:00-8:00 p.m.
Registration is Not Required.

Visit the librarians on the first Thursday of every month for a quick craft lesson. They'll supply the materials to get you started, and you can finish on your own.



Family Game Days (Grades 1-6, Parents welcome too)

Thursday, Feb. 9.
4:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.

Registration is not required

Join us for an all around fun gaming time with board games, video games, and snacks! Come by yourself, bring a friend, or bring your family! See who can get the highest score on Wii Bowling, who can sink the most battleships or who is the champion checker player. Children under 9 must be accompanied by a parent.



Saturday Storytime (All Ages)

Join us as we share a few stories and musical activities. All ages welcome.




The Amazing Animal Adventure (All Ages Welcome

Enjoy the day off school with this interactive adventure menagerie of amazing animals. Watch their hijynx and even get a chance to pet a variety of animals which could include a coatimundi, a kinkajou and more.

Kids' Klub: Something Cold! (Grades 2-6)

4:15-5:00 p.m.

Registration for Bloomingdale residents begins Monday, December 5. Registration for non-residents begins January 19.

What's up with winter? Why is it so gray and cold? Is there a difference between ice and snow? Come find out as we explore the world of cold!




Storytimes

Join us for fun-filled storytimes for preschoolers of all ages. Each program runs for six weeks. Winter Storytimes begin the week of January 9 and end the week of Feb. 13. Registration for Bloomingdale Residents begins on Monday, Dec. 5. Open registration begins January 3.


The following storytimes may be attended on a drop-in basis:

Bedtime Stories (All ages): Tuesdays, 7:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Telling Tales with Yoga (Ages 3 - Grade K): Thursdays, 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Family Storytime (All ages): Fridays, 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.

Registration is required for the following storytimes:

Primary Connections (grades K-1): Mondays, 4:15-5:00 p.m.
Time for 2's (24 - 42 months): Mondays, 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Romper Rhymes (3 - 15 months): Tuesdays 9:45 - 10:30 a.m.
Budding Readers (16 - 23 months): Tuesdays 11:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Preschool Storytime (Ages 3-5): Wednesdays, 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.

Experience gaming on our big screen! Show off your skills in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, fight against friends in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, race in Mario Kart Wii, try out motion gaming with our Kinect, or groove to DDR. Bring your friends and enjoy free food! Registration not necessary, just stop on by! While you're here, be sure to check out the Library's collection of console video games, which includes games for Playstation 2, Playstation 3, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo DS. A Yu-Gi-Oh! card tournament will be held at every first Teen Game Night of the month (the second Thursday). Tournaments are single duel, and no proxy cards are allowed during tournament play.


Anime Club Crunchyroll

Watch anime on the library’s big screen! Help plan new anime and manga events, suggest new anime to watch, bring in your decks to duel, and eat some great snacks. Registration not necessary! Thank you to Crunchyroll and Viz for providing screening permission for our anime.

Dueler's Guild
Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic

Third Saturday of the month
1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Your move! It’s time to duel! Calling all players of collectible games, ages 9 and up! Join us for open play, a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, and snacks! Feel free to bring in other games, including Bakugan, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and other collectible card games. No registration required.
