BPL Chess Club Rules

Behavior Rules
  • Chess should be a courteous game, this means we will never be insulting or rude while playing
  • Absolutely no talking to anyone, especially giving them advice, while playing
  • No running during the meetings since it is both dangerous and distracting to people playing games
  • Talking should be quiet, close to whispering
  • No pieces or equipment should ever be thrown or abused in any way
  • Introduce yourself to your opponents ("Hi my name is...., good luck")
  • Every game should begin and end with a handshake

Chess Rules
  • Make sure to reset your board after every game (put the pieces back where they belong)
  • If there are ever any questions about rules during a game NEVER argue with your opponent, just raise your hand and someone will come right over
  • You have the option of playing either official games, which will determine who plays in the Interlibrary Tournament at the end of the year, or practice games. What kind of a game is being played needs to be decided BEFORE the game starts. If both players aren't in agreement then it's an official game
  • The "Touch-move" rule will be enforced for official games. Touch-move is a rule that states if you touch a piece during your turn you are forced to move it, and if you touch an opponents piece during your turn you are forced to capture it

How to Join the Bloomingdale Chess Club

Just show up! If you attend one of our meetings simply check in with the instructor (Sean) and he will explain the rules and scorekeeping system. After that you'll be sent over to the Youth Services desk to sign up. If you want to sign up on a day when the Chess Club isn't in session stop by the Youth Services Desk and they'll take your information. Then be sure to ask the instructor about the rules when you come in the next Wednesday. There is no fee associated with being a member and both residents and non-residents are welcome. Age requirements are 8 through the summer after senior year of high school.
